However, the essential positive activity of the globe or colony would be in the development, growth and reproduction of the globe. A globe which was merely a satisfactory way of continuing life indefinitely would barely be more than a reproduction of terrestrial conditions in a more restricted sphere.
It is not clear to me why Bernal thought the later either unlikely or undesirable. If I go into space because I want to study the solar wind, or how plants grow in free-fall, or to found an anarcho-syndicalist commune, I want to do those things, and not to reproduce globes, which seems rather lacking, as an end in itself.
