The modern forms of the calculus and mathematical analysis, developed by Weierstrass in the
second half of the 1800s, do not use any infinitesimals, but rather limits. The technique of
neglecting all terms beyond a certain ``order'' of smallness is still extensively used in
applications of mathematics, however.
