Bactra Review    A Future for Socialism
Don't believe everything --- make that anything --- you read in George Gilder. Large firms are alive and well and in 1987 accounted for about the same share of employment in the US as they did in 1962. The best book I know of on the realities of large corporations and corporate networks is Bennett Harrison's Lean and Mean (NY: Basic Books, 1994). Harrison presents a detailed picture of the rise of ``concentration [of control] without centralization [of production]'' and of the institutional mechanisms (market and non-market) which make it possible.
