Pagel has recently published a nice review of these, with extensive references and applications: ``Inferring the Historical Patterns of Biological Evolution,'' Nature 401 (1999): 877--884. Unfortunately, he consistently conflates likelihoods with inverse probabilities throughout this article. This is very odd, not least because likelihoods are correctly interpreted in The Comparative Method.
