• AlexLit [You rate stories and books; it matches those against other people's ratings to suggest new ones you'll like. It's surprisingly effective --- far more accurate than Amazon's equivalent, in my experience. But the server is very slow and sometimes very flaky.]
• The War Against Silence [An excellent weekly essay column, whose author feels compelled, the gods alone know why, to work in music reviews]

• American Booksellers Association Member Directories [Finding an independent bookstore near you or your interests in the USA. I am not as enamored with independent stores as people of my prejudices and condition are supposed to be, if only because I've had to deal with too many of them which had small, boring, uninteresting collections and ignorant, unhelpful staffs, and the big chains and on-line stores are simply better than those were.]
• Fatbrain.com [An on-line bookseller which used to be an actual physical store, called Computer Literacy, in Silicon Valley, but needed a shorter name as a URL.]

  • Advanced Book Exchange [Front-end to the databases of sundry used booksellers; run by a consortium of same]
  • Alibris [Another front-end to used bookstores; higher mark-up and shipping charges than ABE, but sometimes has things ABE doesn't]
  • Moe's Books, Berkeley [For sentimental reasons: I spent an awful lot of time and money there as an undergraduate]
  • Powell's Books, Portland, Oregon [Huge selection --- perhaps the largest collection of books for sale in any one physical location; good shipping rates, search interface.]

  • Edward R. Hamilton Bookseller [Large catalog, which is more readable on-line than in print, wildly varying quality of books. Much cheaper shipping if you mail them a check than pay on-line with a credit card.]
