See e.g. Per Bak, How Nature Works: The Science of Self-Organized Criticality (NY: Copernicus, 1996). I should probably say that I've met Bak two or three times at conferences here in Santa Fe (he probably doesn't remember me). He seems like a nice enough guy, and he's very sound on all the problems with Prigogine's ideas.
