I once endured a talk by a tenured, thoroughly idiotic Danish psychologist, in which he cited this difference in visualization, plus ``of course'' the menstrual cycle, as the reason why women are never good mathematicians. One of the women in the audience was, in fact, an expert in cellular automata and similar spatial stochastic processes --- certainly a much better mathematician than the speaker --- but couldn't, for reasons of institutional politics, tell him where to get off; she drank a fair number of margaritas during the talk.
