And the novel --- Moses Hadas claims Greek novels were in part inspired by "our-glorious-national-past" romances of the peoples conquered by the Hellenistic empires; so e.g. Chinua Achebe would seem to be part of an exceedingly distinguished tradition. (And no one who compares Things Fall Apart to Daphnis and Chole can doubt the reality of progress in the fine arts.)
