Virginia Valian is coming to UM and will give a public lecture on her book Why So Slow? The Advancement of Women --- Friday, 17 October 2003, 3pm, 1200 Chemistry. I recommend it in the strongest possible terms to anyone who'll be in the general vicinity of campus. Whether or not you can come to the talk, the book is extremely worthwhile reading, for reasons I set out in my review.
Update, 17 October 2003: A good talk, extremely well-attended, included a plug for two web-sites: a tutorial on gender schemas and scientific careers and a collection of resources on gender equity, including some annotated bibliographies that look fascinating.
