I have been neglecting Halfway Down the Danube recently, to my loss. There've been some fascinating discussions of books on the the positive relationship between the welfare state and economic growth and on Soviet industrialization (1, 2, 3, 4, 5), including a discussion of a computer strategy game called The Global Dilemma: Guns or Butter. And, of course, there's the saga of Serbia's creationist (ex-)Minister of Education (1, 2). Also nice are their contemplations of the relics of vanished civilizations, and vignettes from "our exciting life in the Balkans".
